Eastern Sensibilities

The imprint left by interior designer Quach Thai Cong on a lavish penthouse in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, reflects his east-meets-west design philosophy.

IT WAS SERENDIPITY that brought Quach Thai Cong into the world of interior design. Formerly trained in fashion and photography, he taught himself the art and science behind interior design when a client at his art gallery enlisted his services to decorate his home. The rest, all 20 years of it, is history.

Based in Ho Chi Minh City, Quach spent a large part of his childhood in Germany, which has proven to be an invaluable source of inspiration and influence on his works. Today, his works are marked by exquisite opulence tempered by a commitment to creating functional designs and homes that can be lived in. He artfully amalgamates European sensibilities with his Vietnamese roots, resulting in an aesthetic that’s singularly unique.

One of the award-winning designer’s latest masterpieces is this 340sqm penthouse in the centre of Ho Chi Minh City. The apartment’s main feature is undoubtedly the centre room, with its fascinating two-in-one concept of incorporating the living room with a working space dubbed as the Office – Salon by Thai Cong.

This was created at the request of the apartment’s owner: the software specialist lives in the US, but when he’s back in Vietnam, he spends most of his time working from home. Thus, he requested for a huge living space that maintained its core function. Forget huge sofas or a television – the pieces de resistance in the office-salon are the refined writing desk wrapped in stingray leather based on the Cicero model from the 20th century, and the leather skinned chair with its Macassar wood-cladded back and handle.

The en-suite deluxe sleeping room is bathed in a delicate palette of white, beige and brown. The bamboo-patterned wallpaper is simultaneously whimsical and discreet, and beautifully complements the dark tones of the curtain to create a stylish, exquisite and cosy living space.

Under the refined eye of the designer, the penthouse is an elegant and harmonious space, and each detail has been thoughtfully designed to enhance the owner’s living experience.
